Parti unifié des patriotes démocrates (حزب الوطنيين الديمقراطيين الموحد -
Unified Party of Democratic Patriots) was established on 2 September 2012 as the
merger of Mouvement des patriotes démocrates (MOUPAD - Movement of Democratic
Patriots, aka Watad), established on 12 March 2011 by the lawyer Chokri Belaïd,
and of Parti du travail patriotique et démocratique (Patriotic and Democratic
Labor Party), established, illegally, on 1 May 2005 and legalized on 19 January
2011.
Chokri Belaïd was murdered on 6 February 2013; the murder caused the
fall of the government ruled by the Islamic party Ennahdha.
In the 2011
election of the Constituent Assembly, Mouvement des patriotes démocrates was the
13th most voted party (33,419 votes; 0.8%), securing one seat (out of 217).
